Heavy rainfall, snow melt, and overall temperamental Alberta weather can put stress on your home, particularly your home’s gutter systems. To prevent flooding and leaks, it’s important to ask yourself how much water should a standard gutter system handle? And as a homeowner, how do you know when your gutter system is failing and needs replacement?

Well look no further. In today’s blog, the Calgary Area gutter experts at Guns N Hoses will go over everything you need to know about gutter capacity, signs of issues and our exclusive replacement processes to make sure your home is well-protected from water damage this season and beyond.

Understanding Gutter Capacity

Gutter capacity is determined not only by gutter size, but also by the number of downspouts attached and the surface area of your roof.

The most common gutter size in the Calgary area is 5-inch seamless aluminum. This size easily handles the average amount of rainfall normally seen in the prairies. However, because every home is unique, other sizes are available and we can assist in custom fits as well.

How to Calculate Gutter Size

Here’s how our experts calculate the perfect gutter size for your Alberta home.

The first step is calculating the drainage area of your roof, and each roof type has a different calculation. For standard, gable-style roofs we simply multiply the length and width of each slope and add them together. For intersecting roofs, also known as hip roofs, or roofs with more than 2 slopes, we add the area (length x width) of each slope to get the total drainage area.

The second step is determining roof pitch and maximum rainfall intensity. The steeper your roof pitches the larger the amount of rainfall your gutters will collect.

The third step is determining maximum rainfall intensity, which in Southern Alberta is typically .47 inches within 60 minutes.

Your gutter technician then multiplies these calculations together to find your perfect gutter size!

Signs Your Gutters are at Capacity

  • Spilling/Overflowing: Water sheeting over the side during moderate rainfall (the primary sign).
  • Erosion: Washout or trenching in the flower beds or grass directly beneath the gutter line.
  • Basement/Foundation Issues: Water pooling near the foundation or signs of basement leaks
  • Sagging: Gutters pulling away from the fascia board.

When It’s Time For Gutter Replacement

You should consider replacing your gutters if you notice visible damage such as cracks, holes, significant rust, or missing sections/fasteners.

Structural problems are another major indicator, including chronic sagging, the gutter pulling away from the house (often due to water damage or poor installation), or damage to the fascia and soffit boards behind the gutter, which signals a long-term failure.

A gutter upgrade is also necessary if your current system consistently overflows during standard Calgary rainstorms, even when clean and intact. This could mean you need an upgrade from the typical 5-inch size to 6-inch gutters or additional downspouts.

Finally, if your gutter system is over 20 years old, it’s time to upgrade to new, more durable aluminum options.

Understanding Gutter Materials

For over 20 years, we’ve been providing high-quality gutter installation and replacement in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Here are a few of our favourite gutter materials for longevity and maintenance.

  • Aluminum: Aluminum gutters are a long-lasting, low-maintenance option, boasting a lifespan of up to 30 years with proper care. They are resistant to corrosion and highly durable against extreme temperatures, making them well-suited for the seasonal highs and lows experienced in Alberta.
  • Galvanized Steel: galvanized steel is known for its durability and ability to resist corrosion. However, it’s important to note that if not properly maintained, it can rust, leading to costly repairs.

Popular Gutter Styles

  • K-style: K-style gutters are the most common and budget-friendly choice. Their design mimics a home's crown molding, adding a desirable aesthetic element. Beyond their appearance, these gutters are valued for their exceptional durability and capacity to manage large volumes of water.
  • Half-round: The half-round gutter style, typically found on older homes, offers a more rustic aesthetic. However, it's a less popular choice because it has a lower capacity for water volume and tends to be less durable and more expensive than the K-style.
